Agency Blames Global Insecurity On Drug Abuse

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has identified drug abuse and trafficking as a major factor responsible for the current global security challenges.

The Chairman of the agency, Mr Ahmadu Giade, made the observation at the public presentation of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime 2014 World Drug Report in Abuja on Thursday.

Mr Giade noted that the global drug situation required an urgent intervention in order to guarantee global peace and development.

It is estimated that 200,000 people die yearly on the usage of drugs, with majority of the dead youths.

Mr Giade appealed for a consecutive effort to reverse the trend of drugs abuse.

“We need to take care of our health because there is some bad news in it and there is some good news to it. If you wish to have a long life, you need to avoid drugs,” he said.

According to the Country Representative of the United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Mariam Sissoko, people suffering from drug use deserve to be treated.

Also, the NDLEA is optimistic that the illicit abuse of drugs would be addressed soon.

The UNODC report provides an overall view on the major development from drug markets, ranging from production to trafficking and development, to new rules, modalities and consumption.
