Suleiman AbbaThe new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Suleiman Abba, has taken over the leadership of the Nigeria Police force, with a pledge to provide safety and security for all Nigerians.

Mr Abba promised that the police would ensure the protection and respect for human rights while promoting community partnerships to prevent social disorder.

“We intend to build on those positive aspects that are firmly entrenched and to reinvigorate those areas where giant strides are expected.

“It is necessary to give attention to specific issues that are critical to the nation and the police,” he said.

Mr Abba stressed that the police would promote community partnership to prevent and control social disaster.

Less than 24 hours, the former Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, handed over to his successor, Abba.

Mr Abubakar thanked all Nigerians for the opportunity to serve and expressed satisfaction with the support that he had received while he was in the office, giving the assurance that he is leaving the police in capable hands.

Having taken over the mantle of leadership, the new IGP promised to hit the ground running, consolidating on past efforts while building new ones.

The rising cases of insurgency, respect for human rights and community policing are of critical importance to the new police chief to ensure that the country is rid of crimes and criminality.

While assuring Nigerians of his commitment to safeguarding lives and property, he warned that indiscipline and unprofessional conduct would not be tolerated in the police.
