Obiano Dismisses Rumours Of Ebola Outbreak In Anambra

The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has dismissed speculations of Ebola outbreak in the state, describing it as unfounded and false.

The report of an alleged corpse flown in from Liberia and deposited in a mortuary in Nkwelle Ezunaka in Anambra State had triggered the rumour, raising  fears in the state.

Governor Obiano reassured the indigenes of the state that every precautionary measure was being put in place to checkmate entry of corpses from any quarter into the state if such corpse bears no identification as to the cause of death.

“Relevant authorities have been consulted to properly look into the case of the corpse at Apex Mortuary in Nkwelle Ezunaka,” he said.

Meanwhile, tight security has been mounted at the mortuary which has been already cordoned off.

Nkwelle Ezunaka, a semi-urban community in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, lies on a major road that leads to Onitsha and Otuocha has been peaceful until the news about the flown-in corpse broke. It caused quite a stir.

According to the President General of the community, Mr Chris Eluemuno, the dead man was from the neighbouring Nando community in Anambra East Local Government Area with no identifiable evidence to prove he died of the Ebola disease.

“The mortuary has been cordoned off with heavy security presence on constant monitoring to ensure no entry and exit movement,” Mr Eluemuno said.

A drive down to the mortuary confirmed his statement, as the police and vigilante personnel were everywhere.

Investigation into the cause of the death of the alleged dead man flown from Liberia into the country and deposited in a mortuary in the state is expected to commence soon. No date was given by the governor for the commencement of the investigation.

In a brief interaction with the people to find out their knowledge of the dreaded viral disease, they stated that such disease had not been detected amongst them.
