The United States government on Friday announced that the leader of the Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab, Ahmed Abdi Godane, was killed following an attack earlier this week.
The US had carried out air strikes on Monday night, which led to the destruction of a vehicle and an encampment south of the capital, Mogadishu.
“Removing Godane from the battlefield is a major symbolic and operational loss to al-Shabaab,” the Pentagon press secretary said in a statement.
He was one of the US state department’s most wanted men and had a bounty of $7m (£4.2m) on his head.
