FECThe Federal Government of Nigeria has rolled out activities for this year’s Independence Day celebrations that will hold on October 1.

At the Wednesday Federal Executive Council Meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo, members looked at the activities’ schedule aimed at making the 54th Independence Day celebration a remarkable and successful one.

The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, told reporters after the council meeting that this year’s activities would begin with Jumat prayers at the national mosque on Friday followed by an anniversary church service on Sunday at the Christian Ecumenical Centre Abuja.

The President, Goodluck Jonathan, who is currently in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, will address the nation in a national broadcast on Wednesday morning.

Mr Maku said that after the broadcast, the ceremonial change of guards will hold at the Presidential Villa followed by anniversary banquet at the Presidential Banquet Hall.

He stressed that Nigeria had every reason to celebrate, having experienced 15 years of nu-interrupted democratic process.

Every year, on October 1, Nigeria marks its Independence Day, in commemoration of the nations freedom from its colonial masters, Britain, in October 1, 1960.
