Three factions have emerged in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Anambra state.

Following the ward congress of the party nationwide, the Anambra state branch of the party held the ward congress under the factional chairmanship of Mr. Ejike Oguebego while the congress was silent in the camp of Mr. Ken Emeakayi.

The third faction led by Senator Ibrahim Mantu has been mandated by the National Working Committee of the party to sack the two other factions and inaugurate a caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of the party in the state pending a state congress.

However, a rowdy session ensued at the venue for the inauguration of the caretaker committee in Awka, as Anambra PDP stakeholders rejected the move by the National Working Committee, insisting that status quo must remain under the Emeakayi leadership.

At Awkuzu ward one in Oyi local government area of the state, the ward congress under Mr. Ejike Oguebego faction was in progress with a large turnout of people to elect the three man adhoc delegate to the state congress.

INEC officials were also on ground to monitor the congress as the participants filed after their choice candidates and counting began. After the counting, a winner emerged and for the participants the congress was a free and fair one while maintaining that the Oguebego faction was the authentic leadership of the party in the state.

While it was difficult to find other places where the congress was taking place in the state, the factional chairman, Mr. Ejike Oguebego, who took over the party secretariat in Awka with his followers, maintained the congress was conducted in the 326 wards in the state and affirmed that he remained the chairman of the party in Anambra.

It was a different kettle of fish for the delegates from the National Working Committee of the PDP led by Senator Ibrahim Mantu who were in Awka to sack every executive of the party in the state and inaugurate a caretaker committee pending the conduct of a state congress.

The stakeholders of the party demanded status quo to remain with Ken Emeakayi leadership till after the election. The meeting was unfruitful as chants of their choice rented the air.

Few days ago in Awka, party members in their numbers passed a vote of confidence on the Emeakayi leadership of the party in the state and resolved to work together and conquer the opposition in the 2015 general elections.

Some of the members decried the impact of factions on the party in the previous years and maintained that the resolve was total ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Inspite of all, the Administrative Secretary of INEC, Oscar-lee Amaechi said the PDP ward congress monitored by INEC was free and fair and stated that the commission recognised the leadership of Mr. Oguebego but rebuffed the question on why the commission recognises the said leadership.
