Climate_ChangeEnvironmentalists in Nigeria have called on government at all levels as well as citizens to take climate change seriously and take actions to protect the environment.

This was done at the 2nd Oye William’s Biennial Lecture organised by the Nigerian – Spanish Association in Lagos.

Oye Williams was a reputable environmentalist who dedicated much of her life promoting a safe and clean planet.

In his address, the Chairman of the occasion, Mr Odein Ajumogobia, stressed the importance of the discourse on environmental protection, saying “the theme – Planet Earth – could not be more appropriate and timely, given the current environmental crisis facing nations worldwide, including our own.

“Spurred by our actions, domestic and global, and the challenges they pose to future human well being and security.”

A speaker at the event, Dr. Newton Jibunoh stressed that other parts of the world had more vegetation than Nigeria and encouraged citizens to cultivate the habit of grooming gardens in their homes”.

One of the discussants questioned why the Lagos State government had replaced the popular Bar Beach with Eko Atlantic City.

“It’s a big question to ourselves, whether we are trading off the future of our children by building modern edifices that are raising “our standard of living” today. It’s a big question.”

“Five years ago, a very comprehensive climate change bill was introduced and it was presented to the Presidency; Five years ago, it still hasn’t been signed”, renowned environmentalist, Desmond Majekodunmi said.
