Ibrahim Gaidam Wins Yobe Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Yobe State, north-east Nigeria, has declared Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the 2015 governorship election in the state.

Declaring the results at the INEC headquarters in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, the Returning Officer for the election in the state and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Professor Ibrahim Njodi, said Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of the APC emerged winner with a total of 334, 847 votes to defeat Mr Adamu Maina Waziri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored a total of 179, 700 votes.

Governor Gaidam, who is the incumbent, won the election in 16 of the 17 local councils in the state while Adamu Maina Waziri won in one.

Mr Gaidam is returning as the governor of the state, having been elected as governor in 2011.

Five political parties contested for the 2015 state’s governorship election.

On the House of Assembly election results, the All Progressives Congress (APC) won 22 out of the 24 available seats while the remaining two were clinched by the PDP.

During the 2011 State Assembly elections, the then All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), which is today the APC won all the available 24 seats of the state assembly.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mr Habu Zarma, commended electoral officers, the media, security agents and observers for their tireless efforts towards the “huge success of the exercise”.

He described the election as generally peaceful, credible, free and fair across the state.
