Murray Leads Great Britain To Davis Cup Victory

World number two, Andy Murray, has led Great Britain to their first Davis Cup triumph since 1936 after defeating Belgium’s David Goffin to clinch the decisive point in Ghent.

Murray headed into Sunday’s final leading 2-1 after he and his brother Jamie secured a crucial win in the doubles on Saturday with Leon Smith’s team counting on the world number two to secure a famous win.

Murray did deliver in emphatic fashion winning 6-3 7-5 6-3, despite a dogged resistance from a fiercely-determined Goffin, to clinch an 11th personal victory in this year’s competition and Britain’s first Davis Cup title in 79 years.

Although the victory seemed comfortable, Murray collapsed to the ground and his team-mates piled on top of him in an emotional celebration.

His first statement after picking himself up was, “I never thought we would have the opportunity to do this.”

Murray also made history by recording officially the best individual run in the 115-year history of the Davis Cup.

Only one man had ever previously won 11 live rubbers in a single campaign before – Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic in 2005.
