Kwara Govt. To Strengthen Law On Cultism

The Kwara State government has concluded arrangement to strengthen the cultism law, to reduce the current increase in cult activities in the state.

The new law, when implemented, would ensure the culprit spends between 10 to 14 years behind bars while the properties and buildings being used for the nefarious activities would be confiscated by the government.

Briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting which dwells on the issue, the State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General for the State, Kamaldeen Ajibade, explained that a new bill would be sent to the state legislature to strengthen the existing bill on cultism.

Confiscation of the properties and buildings used for the crime, according to him, would be part of the new measure while anyone caught would spend between 10-14 years behind bars when convicted.

He denied the insinuation that the government has whittled down the law on cultism. He insisted that tougher measures would be introduced.

Adding his voice, the State Commissioner for Information, Mahmud Ajeigbe, said that the government has realised the need to strengthen the existing law, stressing that parents should constantly monitor their wards who are students in higher institutions to guard against moving with bad friends.

In recent times, there has been increase in cult activities in Ilorin the Kwara State capital, which has led to killings and counter killings.

The Police authority had been parading cultism suspects almost on a monthly basis and has given assurance of its readiness to work with relevant authorities to bring the menace to an end.
