Kano Govt. Out To End Tomato Virus Attack

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has directed the state’s Agricultural and Rural Development Authority to embark on a special assessment of tomato seeds to recommend the best one for farmers in order to avoid similar Tomato virus attack that has left most farmers with massive losses.

During a visit to some tomato plantations across the state, Governor Ganduje said that he has also entered into partnership with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and some international organizations to provide a workable solution to the virus that destroyed more than half of this year’s tomato production.

Tomato farmers in Kano had just celebrated the first tomato production by the Dangote processing factories before the arrival of the deadly tomatoes virus.

Farmers say they have lost billions of Naira as Dangote stopped production due to the unavailability of tomatoes.

This led to Governor Ganduje embarking on the assessment tour where he assured the farmers that their losses would not be in vein.

As part of the state government’s commercial agriculture programme, Governor Ganduje presented letters of employment to some additional 300 agricultural extension workers who were charged with the responsibility of educating farmers on modern farming techniques across the 44 local government areas of the state.

Ganduje also said that his Government has decided to engage Fulani herdsmen into a modern way of practising their trade to include the provision of grazing lands across the state.

Governor Ganduje also told farmers that his government would continue to support and empower agriculturalists in the state to ensure that the growth and development of the economy no longer depend on oil revenue.
