Dried beans export from NigeriaThe House of Representatives has mandated Committees on Agriculture, Commerce and Industry to investigate the ban on the exportation of dried beans from Nigeria to European countries.

This resolution followed a point of order raised by Honourable Dozie Nwankwo on Wednesday during plenary.

He expressed concern over the effect of the extended ban of dried beans export on the nation’s economy.

The ban placed by the European Union was done on the grounds that the produce contained high level of pesticide.

The committees are to report back to the house in two weeks for further legislative works.

Officials of the Nigeria Export Promotion Council had in September 2015 considered ways of reviewing the European Union’s ban of products from Nigeria.

Issues of poor packaging, non-adherence to food safety measures and non-compliance to administrative procedure had characterised ‎product export from Nigeria to countries in Europe.

The Executive Director of the Nigeria Export Promotion Council, Mr Olusegun Awolowo, said the ban, according to a report from the World Bank, could lead to a drop of over $6 billion exportable goods from developing countries in 2016.
