The bills, which were sponsored by Senator James Manager and Senator Nelson Effiong, were unanimously supported by Senators.

Presenting the lead debate on the bill, Senator Manager said the bill was a bold step that would address the educational challenges of the people of the Niger Delta region and also provide a platform for training of top class manpower for the maritime industry.

“The ‪Maritime University Bill seeks to provide a Legal Framework for the maritime University. It will encourage the advancement of learning.

“And if sited in Okerenkoko, it will bring the huge desired development to the oil sector and curb the violence in the Niger Delta by providing employment,” Senator Manager told the lawmakers.

Giving his opinion on the bill, Senator Foster Ogola said that “the University is well located, considering the provisions of all enabling departments.

“Nigeria will make a huge return on this investment because ‪the Maritime University is established for all Nigerians and it will be the first of its kind in West Africa”.
