Veteran filmmaker and actor, Patrick Doyle hosted a select group to a special screening of his forthcoming political thriller, ‘Madam President’.
Guests in attendance included Chairman of the Copyright Association of Nigeria, Tony Okoroji, government officials including Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Lai Mohammed, and other public figures – Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, Musiliu Obanikoro and Donald Duke, amongst others.
‘Madam President’, which marks Doyle’s return to the filmmaking business 15 years after his last production, follows the story of Mrs Tabi Johnson (Ireti Doyle), the vice president of a fictional nation, Bangidi, as she is faced with opposition by other principal officers of the country who conspired to seize power by assassinating the president.
The movie uncovers the intrigues that come to play in national politics, as well as the pain that those close to politicians have to endure when deviants handle the reins of power.
Veteran actress Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett plays Halima, the first lady of the nation.
She said, “It’s about our political situation in a fictional society, which to me is a metaphor for Nigeria, it shows the shenanigans happening in political circles and it really shows the childishness, selfishness of not having a broader view of life, of not having a philosophy for the country except what profits us, just individuals focusing on their own needs and not on the greater needs.
Doyle shares how the idea for the movie which is inspired by Nigeria came about.
“I just thought to myself that what is the possibility of having a female president in Nigeria and it occurred to me that in the conventional way this thing happens, it will be very difficult for a woman to get a nomination of a big political party to run for President,” he said.
“So I said ‘Under what circumstances can we possibly throw up a female president against the backdrop of the main performance of the men?’ And I thought about a scenario of a token vice president who suddenly finds herself in office as president of the federal republic. That is what brought this up.”
Directed by Stanlee Ohikuare, the movie also stars Deyemi Okanlawon, Okey Bakasi, Nobert Young, Ghallywood actor – Fritz Baffour and Kalu Ikeagwu who plays the villain.
Stanlee said, “I felt like the movie was written for Kalu Ikeagwu because he was beyond believable, he was extreme, he was really the devil in the movie.
Speaking with Entertainment News on Channels Television Senator Florence Ita-Giwa explained that a lot of effort was put into the movie.
She said “what is more instructive is how Men perceive women, that women lack the capacity to carry on, how people try to trample on women, even husbands at home attempt that. So women have to be strong.I think it is a brilliant and good movie, they made an effort.”
‘Madame President’ was written by Patrick Doyle over four years ago and was shot in 2016.
