For nearly a decade, Canadian singer Shania Twain dominated the charts from the mid-1990s and remains today one of the biggest selling artists of all time.

However, in 2004, she announced her retirement citing that she needed time to bring up her child. However, the reality was that the singer’s vocal chords had become damaged after unknowingly contracting Lyme Disease.

For years, she struggled with energy levels and getting her vocal chords back on track before finally being diagnosed with the debilitating condition.

Speaking about her diagnosis, she told Reuters “The only thing that I had that related at all was the Lyme Disease and there’s not much I can do about it. It’s what it is. There’s a lot I can do about regaining my vocal competency, my vocal ability and I’ve gone through all of that so I’m grateful about that but I’ll never be able to remove the problem. It’s a permanent injury, I guess you could say.”

Then, in 2008, Twain announced she had split with her husband and musical partner Robert John “Mutt” Lange alleging that he had had an affair with her best friend.

All the lows Twain went through over the last 13 years have been poured into her optimistic new album ‘Now’.

“The album is really about a place that I’ve come to and I’ve been for longer than I’d like in a transition period or a transition phase,” she explained. “I’m just so relieved that I’m finally here now on the other side of that so I’m on the other side of the phase, the transition and so I thought it was really fitting to call the album ‘Now’ as this is where I’ve landed.”

In her heyday, Twain admits she invested all her energy into her career even editing some of her own music videos. Now, she’s changing the way she lives her life.

“I’ve been through a marriage already and I don’t ever want to be divorced again so I’m invested in my relationship in a different way now and so I have to spread myself out and organize my mental energy and my physical time differently and I can’t just be only working on my career all of the time,” she said.

Her debut single off the album “Life’s About to Get Good” is a reflection of her life now.

She said “I ended up in a movie with John Travolta and in this dramatic experience that I never even thought would ever happen and this has all just come out of just a phase that was a transition for me. So hey! I’m feeling good.”
