Another Earth Tremor Hits Abuja

Another earth tremor has hit the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, said the tremor occurred around 12:26 pm affecting the vicinity of Panama Street in Maitama District.

Acting Director General of the agency, Dr Abdulrazaq Garba, told a news conference that preliminary findings by the technical team that conducted a spot assessment in the area indicated that the intensity was felt indoors and lasted less than a minute.

Garba said there was no structural damage as a result of the tremor.

He urged residents of the area and Abuja not to panic.

Tremors had rocked parts of Mpape and Maitama in Abuja early in September this year, causing panic.

At the time, the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) dispelled the fears, stressing that Nigeria is not an earthquake zone.

The agency explained that the shakings could be as a result of stress in underground rocks and rock blasting and mining activities in an area.

On September 12, the Federal Government set up a committee to probe the tremors.
