A 30-year-old woman was killed on Saturday when police personnel clashed with suspected kidnappers in Lagos.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Bala Elkana, confirmed this in a statement forwarded to Channels Television.

It is, however, unclear who fired the bullet that hit late Busayo Owoodun between the suspects and the security operatives.

Mr Elkana explained that a team of policemen from the Anti kidnapping Unit attached to Area M Command Idimu had tracked the suspects to Ijegun – Isolo Road in Ijegun axis of the state.

He, however, said the security operatives came under attack by members of the deadly gang.

According to the spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, the gang got the support of some notorious cultists in the area.

They were said to have attacked the policemen and injured the team leader and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Victor Ugbegun.

Elkana said two other members of the police team were also wounded and left in critical condition but receiving treatment at the intensive care unit.

“Reinforcements from Operations Department, Rapid Response Squads, Task Force, and neighbouring Divisions were able to contain the situation and evacuate the injured officers to the hospital,” he added.

The Command’s spokesman noted that the police have launched a manhunt of the assailants with a view of bringing them to justice.

He said remains of the victim of the stray bullet have been taken to a hospital for autopsy.

The Commissioner of Police, according to Elkana, has ordered an in-depth investigation into the case and condoled with the family of the victim.

He also called for calm and assured the victim’s family and friends that justice would prevail.
