On Thursday May 20, 2021, Project SAFE held a virtual convening for referral and support networks for survivors of gender-based violence in Nigeria.

The event was attended by twelve NGOs from across the country who provide an array of medical, legal, security, psychosocial and shelter support to GBV survivors.

According to the Project Coordinator, Dr. Kedei ibiang, “The only way to fully support a survivor is to equip them with all the necessary and available tools to regain their independence. The participation of NGOs in the legal, medical, security and psychology spheres diversifies the currently limited available channels that survivors have to receive support.”

In order to strengthen these collaborations, Project SAFE launched its integrated technology system that enables information sharing, collaboration and emergency response between responders and survivors. These included the newly launched Area! mobile app for reporting incidents of GBV and general insecurities, USSD code *347*0# and a 24/7 toll-free line 08000-767-767. Project SAFE is currently providing direct and indirect support to over 2000 survivors of gender based violence using these tools.

Speaking to questions about confidentiality of data and the rights of survivors, Dr Tomiwa Erinosho, the Principal Investigator of Project SAFE said “Project SAFE assures its beneficiaries of confidentiality by expressly stating its policies when survivors interact with its mobile app, USSD channels and call center representatives; who receive regular and professional training”.

Project SAFE is an #AI4COVID study leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Data Science to mitigate GBV and Security during and post COVID-19 in Nigeria. It’s support services including the Area! mobile app, *347*0# USSD code, 08000-767-767 and response services are all free.
