A wildfire is currently raging in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Capital.

The fire which is blazing opposite the Fruit Garden Market on Kaduna Street in the D-Line Area of the city, is suspected to have been triggered by a gas explosion late on Saturday night.

Rivers State Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources, Dr. Peter Medee told Channels Television that officials of the Ministry and firefighters from the State and Federal Fire Services have been mobilised to put the situation under control.

At the time of filing this report, efforts were still being made to identify the actual source of the fire.

Dr Medee said officials of a private company that manages the state government gas pipeline within the area have been alerted and ordered to depressurise the flow of gas on the line as to reduce the intensity of the inferno.
