A timely intervention from the men of Anambra State Fire Service has saved the Nnewi Timber Market from being razed by fire.

The firemen had their hands full with a simultaneous firefighting operation in Awka, the Anambra State Capital and that of the Nnewi Timber Market.

The State Fire Chief, Mr Martin Agbili, who confirmed this said the two incidents happened the same day but at separate timelines.

The Nnewi fire incident, according to Agbili, emanated from heap of saw dust in the timber shed area.

“No life was lost and the Timber market was also saved due to timely intervention of the Fire fighters.”

It was reported that the fire started around 11:30am and raged on until it was quenched around 5:40pm.

The Awka incident which started at about 9:22pm behind the SINAI Gas Plant, was said to have been caused by bush fire ignited by unknown persons.

The Gas Plant being located near students’ area caused panic among residents but the fire fighters battled it down at about 10:41pm and there was no loss of life.

Agbili noted that it’s important to raise alarm early once a spark is noticed as, according to him, the time a distress call is made will determine the time of response.

He reiterated the need for all bushes around residential areas, offices or business outlets to be cleared for safety purposes.

This is coming after fire reportedly gutted a section of Dunukofia Local Government Secretariat in Anambra State, destroying a lot of files and property belonging to the Local Government Area.

The cause of the fire was said to be a bush fire which was started by unknown person (s) which gradually escalated into the Local Government Council Secretariat.
