Manchester United have revealed that they plan to trigger a one-year extension to Harry Maguire’s contract.
Despite his previous struggles under former boss Erik ten Hag, Maguire has made seven appearances under Ruben Amorim, providing him an opportunity to impress the Portuguese manager.
The 31-year-old also wore the captain’s armband in the match against Newcastle since 2023.
“Amad is near, Harry Maguire we are going to trigger our option,” Amorim said in a press statement ahead of the Liverpool clash at Anfield.
“I spoke with him [Harry] this morning and I told him he has to improve on the pitch, we need him a lot.
Amorim also admitted the team was in desperate need of a leader and the Englishman suits the bill but needs to improve on his play on the pitch.
“Also, he has to improve as a leader. We all know the situation that he had here but we need him a lot in this moment, so we are going to trigger, happily, the option for him.”
“When you look at our team we are starving for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, he has to improve that part, he has to improve his game, so we are happy to continue.”
