Amid the ongoing political tussle in the Rivers State House of Assembly, the Victor Oko Jumbo-led faction has commenced oversight functions to ensure accountability and transparency in local government administration.
The lawmakers visited various Local Government Areas (LGAs) to assess how council allocations are utilised, with the first stop being Eleme LGA.
During the visit, the House Committee on Local Government Affairs, led by Deputy Speaker Adolphus Timothy, stated that the exercise was not a witch-hunt but a means to enhance efficiency at the grassroots level.
Addressing the legislators, Eleme LGA Chairman, Brain Gokpa, recounted the challenges faced by the council, including the destruction of the Secretariat during post-election violence. He, however, assured that efforts were underway to construct a new Secretariat alongside other developmental projects.
Following an inspection of the project site, the Leader of the Assembly, Goodboy Sokari, commended the Chairman for his efforts while condemning the vandalism of some local government facilities last year.
The Assembly has stated that similar oversight visits will be conducted across all 23 LGAs in Rivers State.
