Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P and formerly one-half of the now-defunct music duo P-Square, has officially announced a change to his birthday, signalling a personal and symbolic break from his estranged twin brother, Paul Okoye.
The announcement, made on Monday, comes amid a prolonged and highly publicised family dispute involving the twin brothers and their elder brother and former manager, Jude Okoye.
Mr P disclosed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that he would no longer celebrate his birthday on November 18, a date he has shared with his twin since birth, but would instead mark it on November 30 going forward.
“Please note that I will not be accepting any messages or gifts on that day. My birthday will now be celebrated on November 30th. This is a personal decision, and I truly appreciate your understanding. Thank you all,” he wrote.
Dear Family, Friends, and Fans,
I’m making it official. November 18th is no longer my birthday celebration date. Please note that I will not be accepting any messages or gifts on that day.

The move effectively ends over four decades of a shared birthday tradition between the twin brothers and has been widely interpreted as a symbolic step in distancing himself from his sibling.

Strained Relationship

The development follows years of strained relations within the Okoye family, which culminated in the group’s split after a brief reunion in 2021. By 2024, both parties had confirmed that P-Square had again disbanded.
In June 2025, Mr P publicly declared that he had severed ties with his family, emphasising loyalty over blood relations. Responding to a fan inquiry on social media, he wrote:
“We are no longer family at this point! Family is blood-related, but the real family is loyalty… love doesn’t manipulate, loyalty doesn’t betray, and family doesn’t steal from you. Family that steals and breaks you isn’t family at all.”
That same period, the singer also accused his elder brother, Jude, of financial misconduct, alleging the misappropriation of $1 million and £34,537.
Legal Battle

The dispute has since escalated into a legal matter. Mr P is a key witness in an ongoing fraud case involving Jude Okoye, reportedly linked to the alleged diversion of music royalties.
Testifying in court, the singer stated that investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission revealed that Jude’s wife, Ifeoma, holds an 80 per cent stake in Northside Music Ltd, while Jude owns the remaining 20 per cent.
He further noted that he had limited communication with both Paul and Jude during the investigation period and was uncertain about his twin brother’s alleged involvement when questioned by authorities.
While reactions from fans and industry stakeholders remain mixed, the move underscores the deepening divide within one of Nigeria’s most celebrated music families.
As of the time of filing this report, Paul Okoye has not publicly responded to his brother’s decision.
