Damaturu Specialist Hospital Gets Equipment, Drugs From NEMA

nemaThe National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has donated some hospital equipment and drugs worth millions of Naira to the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital in Damaturu, Yobe State in north-east Nigeria.

Presenting the materials to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in Damaturu, the north-east NEMA coordinator, Mohammed Kanar, said the medical equipment and drugs for the Damaturu hospital became necessary because of the growing health needs of the inhabitants, who are mostly Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, over 1.5 million persons have been displaced in the north-east, as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency that has engulf the zone for over five years.

MR Kanar said that the growing population of the town, as a result of the IDPs posed great health hazards, and expressed hopes that the equipment presented would serve the purpose intended.

The north-east NEMA boss, who regreted the unfortunate development in the zone, stressed that a visit to the trauma centre of Damaturu hospital revealed that much assistance was required, as a palliative to health issues in the state.

He also expressed hopes that the materials and the equipment would be judiciously used.

Receiving the materials for onward presentation to the hospital, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Mr Musa Idi Jidawa appreciated the gift, saying “it will go a long way in complementing the relentless efforts of the state government”.

Mr Jidawa disclosed that since the commencement of the insurgency, the state government has done a lot in coping with the growing health needs of the people and calls on other well-meaning donor agencies and spirited individuals to contribute to the noble course.

“I want to commend NEMA for this great gesture which will go a long way in complementing the efforts of the Yobe State Government for its prompt response to the health needs of the IDPs and those that have experienced several cases of attacks since the commencement of the insurgency,” he stressed.

The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Hospital Management Board, Dr Babagana Waru, who received the materials for the Specialists Hospital, commended NEMA for the gift, saying it will greatly help the increasing population and also solve the persistent problems of the referral cases.

He also informed NEMA of the Gaidam’s administration resolve to continuously offer free medical care to children below the ages of five, pregnant mothers and accident victims in the state.

“I want to inform you that your gesture is very timely and together with the state government’s efforts of free medical services to children below the ages of five, pregnant mothers and accident victims, it will greatly assist in coping with the growing population of the IDPs and those who often suffer injury during various attacks in and around the state,” he said.

Yobe Governor Praises INEC, Others For Peaceful Election

INECYobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and others for conducting a peaceful election across the country.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote in Bukarti town of Yunusari Local Government Area (LGA) of the state on Saturday, Governor Gaidam said INEC, security agencies, the media and observers played a commendable role towards the huge success recorded during the exercise.

“I want to commend all the stakeholders for the peaceful conduct of the exercise and want to believe that if INEC continues like this, online elections in the country would soon come into effect” Gaidam said.

On the chances of his return as the State Governor, he said his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) would record a “landslide victory, and he will return to his seat overwhelmingly”.

The Governor, while commending the use of card reader also stressed that INEC personnel seemed to have mastered the use of the technology which according to him, was faster on Saturday compared to the presidential and the National Assembly elections.

He also showered praises on the timely dispatch of INEC personnel and election materials for the exercise and hoped Nigerians would utilise the knowledge acquired from the 2015 elections in future polls.

Governor Gaidam further commended the people for turning up en masse for the exercise and attributed it to the relative peace being enjoyed across the country.

Gaidam Satisfied With Conduct Of Polls In Yobe

YobeGovernor Ibrahim Gaidam has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the Presidential election.

Following reports from Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, the Governor said that election in the state went on smoothly despite initial fear of security in the troubled north east geopolitical zone of the country.

With successes recorded during accreditation and subsequent voting in the state, the Yobe State Governor praised INEC, security agencies and other stakeholders for the success of the exercise in the state.

Speaking to Journalists after casting his vote at Bukarti town in Yunusari Local Government Area of the state, Governor Gaidam expressed satisfaction with the performance of the card reader in spite of the much anticipated fear of the new technology being introduced into the nation’s electoral process.

Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, who commended the people of the state for their efforts towards giving peace a chance, hoped similar cooperation would be maintained during the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Gaidam Flags Off Gubernatorial Campaign

Niger RepublicThe Yobe State governor, Mr Ibrahim Gaidam, has flagged-off campaign rally ahead of his re-election bid in the 2015 general elections, with a call on the people of the state to vote massively for the All Progressive Party (APC) for a meaningful change to be achieved.

In his speech at the ground of the rally staged in Sabon Nangere, the capital of Nangere Local Government Area of the state, located in Yobe south senatorial zone, Governor Gaidam told the gathering that the Boko Haram, Kidnapping, robbery and other social vices were product of Political failure at the centre.

He urged the people of the state to vote the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) out for such vices to come to an end.

“The spread of violence across the country are all products of political failure of the PDP government at the centre.

“The Boko Haram, Kidnapping, robbery and other social vices are all products of maladministration on the part of the PDP-led government at the centre and we must change the status quo if meaningful progress can be achieved,” Governor Gaidam said.

He expressed displeasure with the absence of federal presence in the state, saying that “if the APC was given a chance at the centre come 2015, all these social vices would be tackled through provision of employment and meaningful opportunities for jobless youth”.

Governor Gaidam said that within the state, the APC-led government, which he had the opportunity to be at the helm of affairs since 2008, had recorded delivery of over 90 per cent of the campaign promises made and assured the indigenes of the state that more would be done if re-elected.

He listed his achievements which include; urban and rural roads construction, free maternal and child care as well as accident victims among others in the area of education, empowerment and job creation.

The governor, who called on the people of the state to use their voter cards wisely, also urges them to vote massively for the APC. He assured them that he would consolidate on the gains of democracy if given another mandate.

The state Deputy Governor Abubakar Aliyu, on his part, praised the Governor’s initiatives for transforming the state within the shortest period assuring the people that the state would benefit immensely if the APC was given another opportunity.

He said that APC’s doors were open for interested members saying they would never regret joining the party.

The zone B campaign rally held in Nangere also featured presentation of flags to aspirants from the zone and defected members received into the APC fold.

The next APC campaign rally in the state is schedule for Gashua, the Bade Local Government Area for the Yobe north senatorial zone and will be followed by the grand rally in Damaturu the state capital that will be graced by the APC presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari.

Boko Haram: Yobe Governor Asks Police To Be Extra Vigilant

Niger RepublicThe Yobe State Governor, Mr Ibrahim Gaidam, has reminded security forces in Yobe State of the need to be extra vigilant, as the dreaded Boko Haram sect members also have an intelligence unit.

The Governor was speaking on Wednesday after inspecting places destroyed recently by the terrorists group in Damaturu, the state capital.

The Governor said the tracing of strategic places burnt by the insurgents’ shows that they have been moving in and out of the formation with a view to strategising the attack carried out in Damaturu.

While praising the security forces for their gallantry, he advised them to be extra vigilant and take note of who goes in and out of the command to avoid surveillance by the sect members.

The Governor thanked Damaturu residents for their consistent prayers and urged them not to leave the town as the insurgency would soon become a thing of the past. He assured them that more troops would be deployed to the north-east to counter the terrorist activities.

He promised that all the burnt structures would be rebuilt and assured the affected persons of the government support, after it had received and reviewed the assessment report from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

Places destroyed during the attack were; the ‘A’ division, the Area command, the police officers mess, the Izala mosque and some shopping centres located at the Damaturu motor park.

Official vehicles of the Nigeria Police Force and some cars belonging to the officers and men of the command were also burnt by the terrorists.

The Damaturu attack was carried out by suspected members of the Boko Haram insurgents on Friday, January 9.

State Government Expends N669m On Scholarships

Meanwhile, the Yobe State Government has expended N669 million in sponsoring 15, 745 students in various institutions of learning within and outside the country for the 2014 academic session.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Yobe State Governor on Press Affairs and Information, Abdullahi Bego said “Governor Ibrahim Gaidam gave the approval for the release of the funds to the State Scholarship Board for the payment of the student bursaries as part of his drive to ensure that Yobe students get the best possible education, skills and training as they need to play a part in moving the state forward”

Of the 15, 745 beneficiaries of the government’s scholarship payments in 2014 according to the statement, 15, 649 students enrolled in institutions of learning in Maiduguri, Kano, Kaduna and the Nigerian Law School, among others and were paid a total of N309.13 million.

The statement also said other beneficiaries include 17 PhD, 39 MSc and 40 medical students enrolled in overseas universities who received a total of N360 million.

It revealed that the Gaidam administration is committed to supporting Yobe students in every way possible to make it easier for them to enrol in and graduate from universities and other institutions of higher learning which will help the state in the near future.

“The Yobe State Government will also continue to pursue an all-hands-on-deck approach to revitalising and retrofitting its primary and secondary schools to enable them provide quality education to Yobe pupils and students” the statement concluded.

Governor Gaidam Swears In 2015 Election Team To Actualise Return Bid

Ibrahim_GaidamThe Yobe State Governor, Mr Ibrahim Gaidam, has inaugurated a committee that will work out strategies that will ensure his return to office during the 2015 general elections.

Chaired by a grass root mobiliser and House of Representative hopeful, Sidi Karasuwa, the governor said the choice of Sidi Karasuwa was based on his track records in mobilising and galvanising the electorate towards ensuring victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) at all levels.

Inaugurating the committee at the Government House in Damaturu, Governor Gaidam said the appointment and subsequent inauguration of the committee was sequel to his recent endorsement by APC delegates in the state as the sole governorship candidate and stressed that campaign of such magnitude needed collective efforts towards achieving the desired success.

He described the chairman and members of the committee as people with vision, dignity, proven integrity and confidence and expresses optimism that APC would record huge success in the forthcoming general elections.

“His ability to Marshall Men and resources to achieve results has recommended him once again to lead my 2015 campaign organisation. I have immense pleasure to announce the appointment of Hon. Sidi Karasuwa, popularly known as “GUGUWA FASA LAIMA” as the Director General of Ibrahim Gaidam 2015 Campaign Organisation. I congratulate him and remind him that we have high expectations of him and his team to do more in 2015 and surpass previous records” the governor said

He listed the terms of reference of the committee to include; map out calendar for events of the campaigns, address problems promptly and proffer immediate solutions, organise fund raising and maintain the campaign financial accounts among others as well as strategist measures that will ensure the success of the APC at all elections.

Mr Ibrahim Gaidam also asked the committee to make the best use of the social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Google and the YouTube in publicising their activities.

The convener of the inauguration, who is also the Secretary to the Yobe State Government, Mr Baba Goni Machina, described the choice of Mr Sidi Karasuwa among other members of the committee as excellent choice and said their efforts resulted to the landslide victory recorded during the 2011 General Elections.

He expressed optimism that with the support and cooperation of the Governor and well-meaning people of the state, the committee would perform more than what it did in the previous elections.

In his speech, the Director General of the campaign organisation Mr Karasuwa said that with the current political situation in the country, the team decided to tag the 2015 campaign as “Operation Win Your Local Government”.

While commending the governor for having confidence in them, the Director General also told party loyalists to remain watchful on the activities of the opposition in the state particularly on rigging policies.

Yobe Governor Condemns Potiskum, Katarko Attacks

governor_ibrahim_gaidam(1)The Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, has expressed shock at the loss of lives and suffering caused by the attacks in Katarko and Potiskum towns in which about 17 people were killed and many more injured.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Information, Abdullahi Bego, said that the Governor condemned the attacks, describing it as senseless, barbaric and totally unjustifiable.

He said that the thoughts of the Governor and those of his administration were with the families of the victims for the great loss.

While praying God to grant eternal repose to those killed and quick recovery to those who sustained various degrees of injury, the Governor directed that free medical treatment be provided for all the injured until they are discharged from hospital.

“Given the changing mode of attack by criminals and insurgents, the Governor has called on people across the state to remain ever more vigilant to happenings around their communities and to promptly report any suspicious persons or objects to security agents”, the statement read.

He called on security agencies in the state to continue to do more to put an end to the activities of the insurgents while the Federal Government should provide advanced bomb detection and other advance security equipment to help the security agents on the ground to do their work more effectively.

Yobe Government Constructs N2.5b Hospital in Damaturu

governor_ibrahim_gaidamThe Yobe State government has committed the sum of 2.5 billion Naira to equipping the newly constructed 200 bed capacity hospital in Damaturu the state capital.

Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, who revealed this during an inspection visit to the hospital in Damaturu, said equipment had already been procured and would soon be installed for the purpose intended.

He said the government embarked on the construction of an additional hospital in an effort to complement the existing specialists’ hospital also in Damaturu.

The new hospital, according to the governor, will apart from handling referral cases across the state and beyond will also serve as College of Medical Sciences for the state owned university.

He also inspected the doctors and nurses quarters undergoing construction and revealed that his administration will provide a conducive atmosphere for health workers across the state.

The governor who also visited the specialists’ hospital to inspect progress of expansion works on the hospital, and further stated that it would also be equipped with state of the art facilities befitting of a modern hospital so as to effectively tackle health cases across the state.

Mr Ibrahim Gaidam said his administration’s desire to venture into another hospital in the state capital is to curb with the growing population and health needs of the people.

He said government would effectively equip and fund the two hospitals with latest facilities that would improve the standard of health of the people across the state and beyond.

He appreciated the efforts of the state Ministry of Health for the effective supervision of the construction works going on in the two hospitals and praised the various contractors for a job well done.

The state commissioner of health, Dr. Mohammed Bello Kawuwa, who took the governor round the two hospitals says the ministry will work assiduously towards actualising the worthy health policies of the Gaidam’s administration.

They also visited the school of nursing and midwifery also in Damaturu and stressed that the required structures would be provided in the school in order to meet the requirement of the nursing council.

JTF Arrests Four, Recover Items In Fresh Yobe Raid

The Military Joint Task Force (JTF) in Yobe state on Thursday raided a suspected Boko Haram terrorist hideout in Majari village of Gujba Local Government Area arresting four suspected terrorists in the process.

The spokesman of the Task force, Eli Lazarus, in a statement released in Damaturu revealed that “at about 23 hours on Wednesday, the men of the JTF raided the suspected terrorists camp in Majari Village close to Buni-Yadi the headquarters of Gujba Local government area”

The statement said that four suspects were arrested in the camp while one Isuzu pick-up Van, 10 motorcycles, bomb making materials as well as 200 rounds of ammunition were also recovered from the hideout.

A police anti-riot Gun, one pistol, one Dane gun, 43 tear gas canisters, two Police uniforms, one laptop and desk top computers were also recovered from the suspects.

The JTF spokesman also said 13 military kit pads, four police barrettes, helmets and boots as well as medical box with assorted clothing, cooking pots and food items were also found at the camp.

He explained that the pick-up Van was specially covered with mud to avoid spotting it from a far while the exhaust was specially compressed to avoid much noise.

While appealing for cooperation, the spokesman assured that the JTF is working hard to overcome the activities of the terrorists in the state and the country at large.

The Yobe state Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam,  recently imposed a dusk till dawn curfew in the state sequel to the wave of attacks being launched on security forces and innocent citizens by the dreaded Islamist sect Boko Haram.

Boko Haram: Yobe Electoral Body Suspends Council Polls Indefinitely

The Yobe state Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) has postponed indefinitely the Local Government Election earlier scheduled for June this year.

Announcing the postponement on Thursday  in Damaturu after a stakeholders meeting with members of political parties and security agents in the state, the Chairman of the commission, Jauro Abdu attributed the postponement to the insecurity problem bedevilling the state and by extension the northern part of the country as a whole.

‘‘The postponement of the election is because of the degenerating security situation in the state and I want to state clearly that the election will be rescheduled at a later date when the security situation improves’’.

He further disclosed that the present curfew imposed  as a result of the deteriorating security situation does not provide enabling environment for the conduct of the election across the state.

The state governor,  Ibrahim Gaidam, had seven days ago reviewed a dusk to dawn curfew in the state after a meeting with the various security agencies in the state.

The review was sequel to recent killings in Geidam and Babbangida towns of Geidam and Tarmuwa Local Government Areas of the state respectively.

The Yobe state executive council had seven days ago also approved the sum of N192.5 million for the SIEC for the conduct of the LG Polls billed for June 2013

The approval was meant to cater for the cost of printing ballot papers and other electoral materials ahead of the election.

Boko Haram: Yobe Cancels Armed Forces Remembrance Day

The insecurity bedevilling Yobe State forced the ex-service men in the state and the state government to cancel the final activities lined up for the 2013 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration in the state.

The annual event which was held across the country as a mark of respect for the fallen heroes with a special parade by serving and ex-servicemen as well as the 21 gun salute in honour of the departed heroes was not observed in Yobe state.

Journalists and other guests who had gathered at the usual playground for the annual event went home disappointed as no serving, ex-serving soldiers or government officials were present at the venue.

Members of the Boko Haram sect had relentlessly staged series of attacks in the north east state with the last being an attack on a patrol van of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in the state on Monday in Ngelzarma town of Fune Local Government area of the state.

The chairman of the Nigerian legion in Yobe State; Zachary Garba told Channels Television in Damaturu that the usual parade and other activities for the grand finale could not hold because of the insecurity situation in the state.

He however revealed that the state chapter of the legion has planned big for the widows in the state as well as some welfare scheme for its members from the money realized at the emblem week launching.

The Yobe State Governor; Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam has earlier donated N5Million to the legions as well as houses and Hajj seats to the ex-servicemen during the launching of the emblem appeal fund held late last week.

Both serving and ex-servicemen are targets for the sect since the commencement of the Boko Haram insurgency that has affected the state in the recent times.
