Easter Celebration: Ebele Obiano Empowers 70 Widows

Ebelechukwu-Obiano on EasterAs part of the activities marking the Easter celebration, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs Ebele Obiano, has distributed empowerment items to 70 widows.

The items were given to them after they had completed their training in soap making and confectioneries in the second batch of a training programme.

Presenting the items and seed money for take-off of business to the women on Sunday at the Governor’s Lodge Amawbia, Mrs Obiano urged them to display their entrepreneurial skills and transform themselves to employers of labour through due diligence and determination in committing the skills they have learnt to good use.

The widows are among the 2,000 women that have been empowered within two years of the commencement of the programme.

The project, which is designed to touch many lives especially that of the women in the area of skill acquisition to enable them support their families, has well over 2,000 beneficiaries of which the 70 widows are among.

The Desk Officer of the CAFE training programme and the former House Committee Chairman on Women Affairs in Anambra State House of Assembly, maintained that the programme was in tandem with the present reality of economic diversification.

The CAFE project has trained women in various vocational skills;  tailoring, hairdressing, cosmetics and beauty therapy, computer and Information Communication and Technology skills among others.

Easter Celebration: FRSC Warns Motorists Against Reckless Driving

frscThe Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) is warning motorists against reckless driving, overloading and misuse of roads before, during and after the 2016 Easter celebration.

Addressing a media briefing in Abuja, the Corps Marshall, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, said that the commission has taken the necessary measures to ensure free flow of vehicles during the celebration.

Mr Boboye, who gave some safety tips, asked motorists to be careful because of the impact of the rains on the roads.

The commission has over 11,000 officers, marshals, and special marshals deployed across the country to ensure a hitch-free celebration.

Police Assure Oyo Residents Of Safety During Easter

policePolice have assured residents of Oyo State and those coming into the state for the Easter holiday that adequate arrangement had been made to ensure that the holiday would be hitch free.

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Adeleye Oyebade, gave the assurance on Friday in Ibadan at the Eleyele Command Headquarters.

He also advised the public to be more careful and observant in issues affecting their health so as not to fall prey to quacks and untrained personnel in the course of obtaining treatment.

Mr Oyebade made the appeal in Ibadan at the Eleyele Command Headquarters while parading a fake doctor who also dupe unsuspecting members of the public by pretending to be an oil and gas operative.

He told reporters that a kidnapping gang was also busted while some suspected armed robbery syndicate, including those who rob using military uniform, were also apprehended.

One of the suspects claimed he knew nothing of the allegations against him.

Three pairs of complete military uniform and under wear were found in his possession.

Another suspect, a 34-year old lady, claimed she studied science laboratory technology from Ondo State Polytechnic but had been practicing as a medical doctor; precisely a gynaecologist for over five years.

She could not even ascertain how many patients she had treated.

She preys on the ignorance of desperate people especially from churches to perpetrate her evil act.

Apart from the fact she has administered several injections to a woman and her husband without any form of training, she also collected a sum of 1,350,000 from her for oil and gas business.

Another victim was also duped of 22 million Naira also under the guise of oil and gas. She said she met the man from the same church where she met the other victims.

She did not deny the allegations, but claimed she gave the money to a spiritualist who introduced her to oil and gas.

The man denied her claims, saying he only collected 700,000 Naira from her for spiritual purpose.

The Oyo State police boss, however, warned the public to be wary of dubious people who engage in unwholesome practice.

He added that adequate arrangement had also been made for traffic control within the towns and on the highways to ensure safety during and after the Easter.

Security Beefed Up Ahead Of Easter Celebration In Plateau

Easter security in PlateauA joint operation by security agents in Plateau State has been put in place to monitor situations ahead of the Easter celebration.

A ban has also been placed on all forms of road side and illegal sale of petroleum products during the fuel scarcity period in Nigeria.

The Commander of the Special Task Force, Operation Safe Haven, Major General Tagbo Ude, disclosed this to reporters on Thursday in Jos, Plateau State capital.

He expressed concern over the increase of illegal petroleum dealers across the state, which is a potential danger in the state, particularly as the Easter celebration is at hand.

Addressing troops after a parade, the Commander urged members of the joint security force to be in readiness for the task of maintaining law and order during the festive season.

Other decisions taken towards a hitch free Easter season by the heads of security agencies at the gathering include an increase in patrols and checkpoints at places where the general public might largely gather.

The Commander also disclosed that security personnel have apprehended some suspects for the possession and manufacturing of arms during a raid on the hideouts of the hoodlums.

 

Obasanjo Urges Traders To Vote As They Did Last Saturday

ObasanjoFormer President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has urged Ogun traders to “vote as they did last Saturday” during the Presidential and National Assembly elections. 

The former president made this appeal when he visited traders at the Itoku market in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, to mark the Easter celebration.

The former president justified his visit to the market saying as “a member of the community, I have the right to visit my people especially in the spirit of Easter.

“Since I came back, I have not really visited any market. I have come to do two things. I have come to give them Easter greetings and to find out how they are doing in their market.

“This is my community. As a member of the community, I want to know what’s going on and what’s happening in the community, ” Obasanjo stated.

Easter Celebration: Nigerians Asked To Thank God For Successful Elections

Okorocha on Easter CelebrationThe Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has urged all Nigerians home and in the diaspora to use the period of the Easter celebration to thank God for a peaceful presidential and National Assembly elections.

Governor Okorocha further urged Nigerians to also pray for smooth and peaceful transition of government on May 29.

Speaking to Channels Television at the Government House in Owerri, the Imo State capital in south-east Nigeria, Governor Okorocha said the Easter period which herald the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, should also be an avenue for Nigerians to “reflect on the tenets of sacrifice, patriotism and love for our dear country, as Christ loved the world and sacrificed his life that all may live”.

He also urged all Nigerians to cultivate the spirit of forgiveness and embrace one another, as “no other country can be called ours except Nigeria”.

The Imo State Governor also commended the spirit of maturity and love shown by President Goodluck Jonathan by congratulating the president elect, General Muhammadu Buhari.

Governor Okorocha said, all political leaders in and outside the country should take a cue from the maturity displayed by President Jonathan in order to make the society a better place for all to live and prosper.

He further prayed that God would continue to bless Nigerians, especially Imo people and all patriotic leaders in the country, as they celebrate the Easter.

The Governor also appealed to Nigerians, irrespective of their political, religious or ethnical differences, to come together and support the incoming government, with the President-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari, as the driver.

“The APC led administration will run an all inclusive government, irrespective of where their interest lies during the Presidential campaign,” Governor Okorocha said, expressing optimism that General Buhari’s administration would bring the desired change Nigerians yearn for.

Speaking on his chances at the April 11 governorship polls, Governor Okorocha said he was optimistic that his party would emerge victorious, following his achievements in the lasts three and a half years in the state.

He, however, called on all security operatives, especially the Army and State Security Service (SSS) in the state to carry out their duties and desist from intimidating voters.

Southerners Leave Kaduna Ahead of Election

kaduna Nigerians particularly southerners living in Kaduna State and other parts of the north are migrating to their villages in anticipation of post election violence.

This is despite the pleas by Igbo leaders and Ohanaeze Ndigbo to Igbos in other parts of the country, especially the North, to vote where they live.

Channels Television visited some motor parks in the state capital, reported that many families prefer to travel to their home towns ahead of the election, in anticipation of election violence.

Some of those interviewed, gave reasons for their traveling to fear of an outbreak of election violence, as witnessed in 2011, while others claimed they are traveling ahead of the Easter Celebration.

Some of the passengers who were seen at the motor park said, they would stay until after the elections before returning to the North, adding that they abandoned their businesses for fear of crisis.

Commuters are traveling along with mattresses and other household items, signalling that they may likely stay for quite some time before returning to their bases.

In 2011, many people in the state were killed including non indigenes during the post election violence in Northern Nigeria.

While assuring residents of adequate security during the general elections, the Kaduna state commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu, called on people not to panic. The Commissioner said that the fear is unfounded, noting that such movement will only be necessary if they were going home to cast their votes in the elections.

Mr. Shehu, also warned of a restriction order starting from Thursday evening, adding that all exit and entry points into the state will be blocked by security agencies ahead of the election.

The Kaduna state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has however faulted the Police commissioner’s restriction of movement order, saying that it is illegal and unconstitutional to bar people from moving around freely more than 48 hours to the election.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) has received all non-sensitive and sensitive materials in preparation for the election. The materials were brought to the state amidst tight security.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Husseni Mahuta who briefed journalists in his office, said adequate arrangement has been put in place to ensure a hitch free election, while it is still distributing Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) that are already in its custody.

Amosun Preaches Religious Tolerance In Easter Message

amosun_waveIn the spirit and the mood of the occasion of the Easter celebration, Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has enjoined Nigerians to always resolve their religious differences amicably rather than resort to violence.

The Governor, who stated this in his Easter message, noted the triumph of Jesus Christ over death through His resurrection, adding that people of all faiths should emulate the selfless sacrifice of Christ, as well as the peace he preached in spite of the challenges confronting the nation.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mrs Funmi Wakama, Amosun said that Easter is an important event in the Christian calendar, which teaches lessons on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“We must not allow the lessons of the season be lost on us. All faiths must preach peaceful evangelisation, by so doing, we will be able to tolerate one another and live in peace and harmony”, he said.

The Governor also condemned the spate of violence in some parts of the country and called on all Nigerians to eschew violence in the spirit of the season.

“We must find other means of expressing our grievances rather than allowing such to fester, he stated, adding that “As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, let us turn our religious diversity into an advantage and continue to live in peace and harmony.”

He promised citizens of Ogun State more dividends of democracy and wished the Christian faithful a happy celebration.

 

 

FG To Rehabilitate Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Warri Refineries

As part of measures to reposition the nation’s refineries for optimal performance, the federal government has concluded plans for total rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna Refineries.

The Public Affairs Manager of the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, disclosed to Channels Television in Kaduna, adding that the complete overhaul will be handled by the original companies that built the refineries.

He said the rehabilitation of the Kaduna Refinery will be handled by Chiyoda Corporation, a Japanese company.

The Port Harcourt refinery will be the first to undergo rehabilitation which is expected to commence by June this year. The overhaul according to the refinery official will be done in phases.

Meanwhile, Mr. Idris has assured passengers travelling for the Easter holiday of adequate supply of petrol.

He, therefore, advised the public not to engage in any panic buying of fuel as the refinery has enough PMS to serve states in the North during and after the celebration.
