VIDEO: My People Say They Have No Land For Ranching – Umahi

Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, says his people have no land to give out for cattle ranching.

Governor Umahi stated this on Monday evening while appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’.

Umahi said each state in the South-East already has laws banning open grazing and as such, it is way off as he is a servant to his people.

“This is not about the governors, it is about the people, so, whatever position the people take in this regard, that is what will happen. There is no land in this regard that is not owned by individuals, corporate bodies.

“So, this is beyond governors and that is the truth. People calling governors are making a very grievous mistake. Even if I say as a governor in South-East, I want people from this village, I want you to donate this land, the question is: will they allow it?

“I have heard about three communal crisis in my state, and it is all about land. There is a place that I am building a medical university and the people of that village, for a project that is almost completed, went and brought it down. They prefer to have their farms than a medical college. So, the land is a different ball game altogether,” Umahi stated when asked whether he would provide land for ranching as a governor.

Speaking further Umahi noted that his people have “said they have no land for ranching. They put me where I am. If I have one acre of land and I am talking about giving land for ranching, I should be talking about that particular land. I can’t be talking about somebody’s land. Yes, constitutionally, I have control over the land but you have to kill all the people to get the land.”

Earlier in the year, Southern Governors banned open grazing of cattle across states in the region and urged the President to address Nigerians on the state of the nation.

The governors also called for the restructuring of the country to address increasing agitations in different parts of the nation, while restating their commitment to the unity of the country.

In reaction to the ban, the presidency said the governors failed to provide any solution to the lingering crisis between farmers and herders in the country.

Seeking to profer the needed solution, President Muhammadu Buhari in a recent interview stated that the government will return to a practice in which herders will ply designated grazing routes across the country.

The President said the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has been asked to begin the process to see how these routes can be legally put back to use, a directive which has not gone down with many Nigerians, with some claiming that the insistence on open grazing points to a hidden agenda.

@OfficialAPCNg in accordance with his conscience and principles rather than any external influence or coercion.

The continuous detention of the self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been on the front runner of discussions among the Governors of the five states in Nigeria’s South-east region.

The leaders, who met for the second time in 2017 at the Government House in Enugu State, announced their resolve to engage relevant authorities at the Federal level and the region to address the issue.

The Chairman of the forum and Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, told reporters that other issues discussed at the meeting include ecological problems facing the region and economic integration among others.

The meeting comes barely two weeks after the Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, called on the Federal Government to consider the release of the self-acclaimed IPOB leader.

Governor Okorocha attributed Kanu’s actions to youthful exuberance, saying he believes that his continued detention is a distraction.

He added that some leaders in the South-east region are already coming together to make a case for his release and would caution his actions afterwards.

Mr Kanu was arrested in October 2015 and has been held in prison since then, despite various court orders that ruled for his release.

Members of the IPOB in the South-east have also held series of protests, demanding his release.

Seven Ebonyi Lawmakers Withdraw From Governor’s Impeachment Move

Ebonyi Seven members of the Integrity Group of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly have  withdrawn from any further involvement in the impeachment move against Governor Martin Elechi.

The decision of the seven lawmakers to withdraw from the impeachment move was made known on Tuesday by the the chairman of the Integrity Group, Honourable Enyi Enyi, representing Ezza north-west state constituency while briefing reporters.

The lawmakers were part of 15 lawmakers that signed the impeachment move. They made a U-turn on their decision, setting a twist to the Ebonyi State governor’s impeachment saga.

Honourable Enyi  explained that the decision to withdraw from the impeachment ply was taken after several consultation within and outside the State.

The chairman further said that the decision was necessary so as to enable peace reign in the State.

“It should be on record that the earlier plans to impeach the Governor is part of the functions of the House of Assembly and no politicians in or outside the State influenced their decision to impeach the Governor,” Mr Enyi also stressed.

He however advised his other colleagues to sheath their swords and embrace peace in the interest of the State.

Ebonyi Impeachment: 9 Members’ Lives Allegedly Threatened

Ebonyi House of AssemblyFollowing the purported impeachment motion that was moved by 15 lawmakers in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly to remove the incumbent Governor of the state Mr Martin Elechi, the remaining 9 members of the House have disclosed that their lives are now being threatened for not supporting the motion.

According to them, desperate attempts are being made through several means including death threats, financial inducement and intimidation to force them to append their names to the impeachment plot which they have failed to be part of.

While briefing journalists in Abakaliki, the state capital, on Saturday, the nine members maintained that the Speaker of the House, Hon Chukwuma Nwazunku violated the section 188 sub section 4 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, in his proceedings on the impeachment move.

The said section states that a motion shall not be declared as having been passed unless it is supported by the votes of not less than two-third majority of all the members of the House.

The lawmakers maintained that they will not be a party or attempt to sign any document seeking to remove the Governor from office.

Having governed Ebonyi State for seven and a half years, less than two months to his handing over ceremony, the state Governor, Mr Martin Elechi is faced with an impeachment move by lawmakers in the state following an accusation on an 8 count charge including misappropriation of state funds, gross misconduct and embezzlement.

Since the motion was supported by just 15 members out of the 24 members of the house which constitutionally is not two third majority of the House, the other nine members gathered to brief journalists on the matter.

One of the lawmakers, Eni Chima maintained that they will not subject themselves to be used by any person or group to destabilise the peace in the state, as they would not be a party to or attempt to sign any document seeking to remove the Governor from office, even at gun point.

The lawmakers further accused the Speaker of the House of collaborating with some other politicians in the state to unlawfully impeach the Governor, who they said is a founding father of the state.

However, in an interview with Channels Television, one of the founding fathers of Ebonyi State and an elder-statesman, Chief Egwu Chima said the recent developments in the political scene were rather disappointing and unwarranted, considering the level of sacrifice and service the present state Governor had deposited in the state from its creation.

He added that the issue at stake is a matter of destructive obsession by some unscrupulous elements who are hellbent on ruling the state.

Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, the 15 lawmakers including the Speaker of House, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku disclosed that they are far away in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, for a meeting.

As it stands now, the Governor is yet to be served with the impeachment notice.
