Ogun Govt. Raises Alarm Over Impending Floods

ogun-rainThe Ogun State Government, has raised alarm over an impending flooding in various places in the state as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) in its 2017 seasonal rainfall prediction.

Briefing journalists in Abeokuta, the state capital, the state Commissioner for Environment, Mr Bolaji Oyeleye said areas to be affected by the flood include Abeokuta, Ewekoro, Ijebu Igbo, Ijebu Ode, Ikenne, Ota among other towns in the state.

While asking residents to maintain a high level of personal hygiene, the Commissioner, however, warned them against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in canal, and water in the state.

“The 2017 seasonal rainfall prediction by the NIMET showed floods may occur in some states in the north and west even as a shorter length of rain is predicted in most part of the country, rainfall amount is predicted to be above normal in and around Sokota, Zamfara, Niger, Kwara, Ogun and Adamawa”, he said.

He further noted that, “NIMET predicts the earliest onset date to be February 25, over the coastal region of the Niger Delta, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Plateau, Rivers, Bayelsa, Ogun and Oyo states are predicted to record early onset dates by about, three to seven days range from their 30 years normal.

“NIMET also predicted that many Nigerians would likely experience “Above danger heat stress” this year, due to combination of heat and humidity, this impact is that exposure to excessive heat for too long could cause heat stress, which may in turn lead to severe illness collectively called “Hyperthermia”.

“We are appealing to residents not to block drainage channels, either natural or constructed, refrain from dumping waste into drainage channels and rivers or stream flow course” he concluded.

Olufunso Amosun Reaches Out To Less Privileged In Ogun

Olufunso Amosun, Ogun, Less PrivilegedWife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs Olufunso Amosun, has reached out to the less privileged in the three senatorial districts of the state.

In the spirit of the Christmas celebration, the Governor’s wife, her children and spouses of government officials embarked on food outreach programme in Ogun State.

The team, under the aegis of the Uplift Development Foundation, the first lady’s pet programme, distributed rice and cash gift to residents of Ijebu Ode, Ado-Odo Ota, Abeokuta, Sagamu, Obada and Ewekoro among other areas in the state in southwest Nigeria.

Highlighting the significance of the exercise, Mrs Amosun said that the economic hardship facing Nigeria made the gesture necessary.

She stressed that the foundation decided to make the people happy and celebrate their Christmas with joy by reaching out to them.

The governor’s wife noted that the foundation would continue to uplift people and provide succor to the less privileged in the society, irrespective of their religion or political affiliation.

Amosun Commissions Owowo Farm Settlement

FarmThe Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has challenged youths of the state to make themselves available for the opportunities being created by the state government in the agriculture sector and its value chains.

This, he said, would break the cycle of poverty and improve the economy of the state.

He made the call while commissioning the Owowo Model Farm, located at Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state.

The farm was established to provide gainful employment for young farmers who are willing to make careers in the agricultural sector.

While restating his administration’s commitment to partnering with the private sector to develop agriculture, he promised to provide the much needed enabling environment for investment in the sector.

The Owowo Farm Settlement was initiated also as a way of reducing the quest for white collar jobs among the teeming population of the youths in the state.

A total of 400 young farmers already occupied the farm centre and their products were on display as the Governor maintained that agriculture remains the way to go.

Some of the young farmers shared their experiences, and they were filled with success stories of improved means of livelihood and pride of being self-employed in the face of the challenges in the labour market.

The Nigerian government has repeatedly stated its mission to diversify the nation’s economy from being oil-dependent.

Agriculture and solid minerals have been identified as more promising sectors through which the Nigerian economy can be sustained.

12 Cultists Renounce Membership, Get Amnesty In Ogun

CultistsTwelve members of various cult groups have renounced their membership of those cult groups in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, South West Nigeria and have since been given amnesty by the Ogun State Police Command.

Addressing traditional rulers, community leaders, parents and guardians at a ceremony held in Itori, the headquarters of Ewekoro Local Government, the state Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, said that cultism remains a serious crime in the state and anyone caught would no longer be treated with kid gloves.

The 12 former cultists whose activities have resulted in many armed robbery activities in their communities, decided to renounce their membership before their parents, traditional rulers and community leaders.

Giving amnesty to the former cultists, the state Commissioner of Police read the riot act on behalf of the State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, as he warned youths in Ogun State to desist from cultism.

As part of the amnesty, there was a documentation of those who renounced their membership by the Police authority for effective monitoring of their activities.

Governor Amosun Promises New City Development In Ogun Central

AmosunThe Government of Ogun State, South-West, Nigeria, says it is initiating a multi-billion naira new city development in Ifo, Ewekoro and Obafemi/Owode Local Governments in Ogun Central Senatorial District of the state.

This disclosure was made by the State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, while on the working tour of Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state.

Addressing the huge crowds that gathered at the event, Governor Amosun, while highlighting some of the achievements of his administration in the past three years, also announced some developmental projects being initiated within the state.

As he sought for the understanding, cooperation and support of the residents, he also announced the resuscitation of the abandoned Federal Government airport located at Alamala Military Barracks in Abeokuta.

The working visit was the eighth in the series of the assessment tour by the Governor to Local Government Areas in the state.

Huge crowds converged to cheer and appreciate him for what he has been able to achieve in his rebuilding mission.

Traditional rulers were not left out of this as they pledged their loyalty and support to the administration in the task of providing development across the state.

Governor Amosun promised that his administration would remain committed to its mission of improving the frontiers of development in Ogun State as an emerging economy in the country for socioeconomic development.
