As the World prepares for the United Nations framework convention on climate change otherwise known as COP 19, billed to hold in Warsaw Poland, Nigeria says it is fine tuning its focus for the conference.

Acting Director, Climate Change Department in the Ministry of Environment, Mr Adejare Adejuwon, said Nigeria will join other developing countries to seek stronger commitments to the climate change protocols from developed countries.

According to him, areas of focus include funding, reduction of greenhouse gas emission and a clear progress on the mechanism to support loss and damages caused by climate change.

He further stated that Nigeria will also use the opportunity to strengthen relationships that will further impact on the economic transformation of the country.

The 2013 United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Warsaw, Poland from 11 to 22 November 2013, will be the 19th yearly session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 19) to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 9th session of the Meeting of the Parties (CMP 9) to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, the protocol having been developed under the UNFCCC’s charter.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC or FCCC) is an international environmental treaty negotiated at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), informally known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro from 3 to 14 June 1992. The objective of the treaty is to “stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system”.
