About 20 teachers in some primary schools in Benin City, the Edo State capital, have all lost their jobs for being absent from school.

The state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole who disclosed this when he embarked on an unscheduled visit to some schools said that the school’s suitable environment provided by the state government is useless if teachers do not teach students.

The governor claimed, he will be using the unplanned visits to restore discipline among staff of the State Public school system.

At Asoro primary school the governor noticed malpractices in the teachers register as those signed in earlier in the day, were absent at the time of visit.

A visit to Western Boys High School and Emokpae Primary School, revealed similar trend.

Addressing teachers and students at Western Boys High School the Governor called for significant change in the attitude of teachers to work.

The Governor who had expressed his life-long benefits from the public school system, also expressed his displeasure by the rot in the system and he ordered that all the teachers who were absent should be dismissed.

At George Idah and Esonere primary schools the case was different, as all the teachers were present at the time of the Governor’s visit to their schools and the teachers expressed appreciation to the Governor for infrastructural development in the school.

At Payne Primary School the head teacher Mrs. Ojo asked for the provision of more basic amenities for the school.
