The Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Nwike, who revealed this at the Launching of the Tompolo Foundation in Warri, Delta state said “though N5 billion is provided annually for teachers training and another N7 billion is budgeted for text books most state governors still do not access these funds”.
The minister revealed that “Nigeria has the highest rate of illiteracy in the Africa, with over 35 five million illiterates. Out of which 10.5 million are children and about 8 million of these children are from the Northern part of the country”.
These figures were reeled out by the minister who represented Vice President Nnamadi Sambo.
Nwike however said the Federal Government has made the policies and provided the funds and “wonders why most states still do not want to access them”.
The Tompolo foundation however said its primary focus is providing text books, school shoes, uniforms and the likes to ensure quality education for Niger Deltans.
The foundation also seeks to explore means of partnership with Federal Government.
