Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has promised to use the rest of his life in the service of Nigeria, Africa and humanity by providing purposeful leadership.

Mr. Obasanjo made the pledge at an event in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, South West Nigeria, on Tuesday, where a book was launched to commemorate his 76th birthday celebration.

The book titled ‘Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Legacy 1999/2007’ chronicled the stewardship of the former Head of State as President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007.

The two-volume book is composed of 20 essays written by eminent Nigerians and it was described as an attempt on the assessment of the Mr. Obasanjo’s achievements in the eight years under review.

The assessment was conducted on the areas of economic development, the various reforms, and fight against corruption among others decisions taken by this administration.

Speaking at the occasion, President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Mike Oghaidume, commended the former president for his selfless service and leadership roles in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.

The President had earlier in a letter stated that Nigerians owe the former president an “enduring debt of gratitude” for his contribution to the development of the nation.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of prizes to winners in the inter-collegiate competition on human security in Africa by the Centre for Human Security based at the Obasanjo Presidential Library.

The event attracted family members, friends, captains of industries, political associates and members of the diplomatic corps.
