Wigan celebrated their first ever FA Cup win with an open-top bus tour of the town today.

Thousands of people turned out to celebrate with the players and staff, some of whom are likely to leave the club soon because, in spite of beating Manchester City 1-0 to win the FA Cup on May 11, the club is being relegated to the Championship (2nd tier) next season after eight years in the Premier League.

FA Cup goal scorer Ben Watson was among those showing off the cup to delighted fans in the northern English town. He broke his leg in a match last November and only returned to the team this month.

Also on the bus was Wigan’s Spanish manager, Roberto Martinez, who many people think will want to leave now that the club is going down.

Drained after winning the FA Cup for the first time on Saturday, Wigan crashed back to earth with a 4-1 loss at Arsenal on Tuesday as it dawned on the club that they are sure faced with relegation to the championship.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said the FA Cup is an achievement that they will never lose as a club, being their first silverware but also is a real shame it happened in the same season as relegation,”.

Facts have shown in the record of English football that it has never happened to an FA Cup winner in the same season.
