At the end of the extraordinary IOC session in Lausanne, the six men who want to replace current president Jacques Rogge took the stage to argue their case for election.
The six are Germany’s Thomas Bach, Ukraine’s Sergey Bubka, Puerto Rico’s Richard Carrion,Singapore’s Ng Ser Miang, Denis Oswald of Switzerland and Taiwan’s Ching-Kuo.
Jaque Rogge said to reporters at a news conference that it was a good idea to have the candidates present their program as many of the members liked and also thought it was a good idea that they want it to be organized.
Wu Ching-kuo, President of the International Amateur Boxing Association, and an IOC member since 1988, rated himself to be the best man for the job.
He has served on the IOC for 25 years and working on nine different commissions and he is 24 years involved in the Culture, Education Commission, building the three Olympics museums during this period. He said further that he has also been nudged by many of his colleagues as best qualified and he has considered it too.
Puerto Rican banker and businessman Richard L. Carrión has been a member of the IOC since 1990 and is the only candidate who has not competed at an Olympic Games.
Carrion said it is something that has been in his heart for a long time, because his believe is in the movement, a movement which is based on value very close to his heart and that which can really change the world.
At 49, pole vault world record holder Sergei Bubka, is the youngest of the candidates.
Ng Ser Miang, a Singaporean sports leader, diplomat and businessman, has been a member of the IOC since 1998 and vice president since 2009.
Thomas Bach is a former German Olympic fencer, and is currently Vice President and executive board member of the IOC and President of the Appeals Chamber of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Denis Oswald, a former Olympic rower for Switzerland, is also President of the International Federation of Rowing and a member of the IOC since 1991.
The new IOC President will be elected during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires on September 10th.
