NEMA, Flooding, Anambra state

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA in collaboration with Imo State Emergency Management Agency (IMSEMA) has established an IDP camp in Alaoma community in Oguta local government area of Imo state, as part of proactive measures put in place to prevent a re-occurrence of flooding that ravaged most parts of the country last year.

The devastating flood that left many dead and property lost last year might have gone but not with its negative effect.

During a one day interactive and sensitisation workshop which was attended by NGOs; Faith based organisations, and various organisations within the state at the camp premises located in Alaoma, Oguta local government area of the state, the DG of NEMA, Muhammad Sidi explained that NEMA is poised to avert the untold hardship and adverse effect which came with the unprecedented flood of last year.

One of the major problems faced during last year’s flood was the relocation of persons affected during the flood and this prompted the NEMA DG, Muhammad Sidi to visit Imo state, being one of the states predicted by NIMET on flood warning. The agency had to move to acquire and provide emergency camps which will provide shelter and respite for victims.

He expressed confidence that even if the floods occur, the negative impact won’t be disastrous as the people had over time been adequately sensitised on signs to expect and steps to take.

He however advised the people not to hesitate in relocating to the already provided IDP camp where all arrangements have been put in place to cushion the effect of the expected flood.

After the workshop, the representatives of the various communities commended the Management of NEMA for the workshop, saying the workshop has impacted on them as they have been educated on what to expect and how to go about it during the flood.
