US President, Barack Obama, will be meeting with exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama. However, not everyone is thrilled about it.

China has gone as far as urging the US to cancel the meeting, saying it would seriously impair China-US relations.

This is because China sees the Dalai Lama as a separatist, while in his defense, the spiritual leader said that he only advocates greater autonomy for Tibet, not independence.

China had been widely accused of repressing political and religious freedoms in Tibet. Beijing has however, discarded this and said that economic development has improved Tibetans’ lives.

The Chinese Government accuses Dalai Lama of orchestrating the protests, a charge he strongly rejects.

Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959, after Chinese troops crushed an attempted uprising in Tibet.
