The All Progressives Congress (APC) has held its State congress across Nigeria, with the congress postponed in Adamawa, Edo, Kaduna, Kano and Katsina States.
The congress was initially shifted from Wednesday, April 23 to Saturday, 26 because of the security meeting between the 36 states’ governors and President Goodluck Jonathan earlier scheduled to hold on Wednesday.
The party says it postponed the congress to allow its Governors attend the security meeting, which was later held on Thursday.
Earlier congresses of the APC has sparked several controversies and disagreements due to what some members say is fraudulent conduct and side-lining of structures without proper harmonisation of the legacy parties which formed the APC.
The APC was formed in February 2013, as a result of an alliance by Nigeria’s four biggest opposition parties, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
The parties decided to come together to form a stronger opposition to the ruling People’s Democratic Party.
Ahead of the congress, the APC in Kano shifted its state congress to Monday, April 28.
The Chairman, Congress Supervising Committee in the state, Dr Mustapha Inuwa, told reporters on Saturday that the decision to shift the exercise to April 28, was reached in a meeting held in Kano on Friday between the committee and stakeholders of the party in the state.
The State Congress of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State is underway in Akure, the State Capital.
In Akure the Ondo State capital, five candidates are gunning for the Chairman of the party in the State: they are: Mr Isaac Kekemeke, Mr Sola Iji, Mr Ade Adetimehin, Professor Claudius Daramola and Gboyega Adesida.
Mr Femi Pedro, a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State is the Chairman of the State Congress Committee.
The exercise commenced with accreditation of delegates, amidst tight security with fully armed policemen.
There was however an argument, as some candidates in the congress including Mr Isaac Kekemeke and Prince Abayomi Adesanya complained that the names of some delegates had been removed and replaced with others.
The issue was however resolved with the intervention of policemen at the venue before voting commenced.
