Anambra

AnambraThe Anambra State Government has commenced the second phase of rehabilitation of collapsed portions and filling of pot holes on roads across the state, tagged ‘Operation Zero Tolerance to Pot Holes’.

Governor Willie Obiano flagged off the exercise in the three senatorial zones of Anambra State, owing to the Federal Road Safety Corps records that 109 people died of road mishaps within the state between September and December 2013.

The state has resolved that such a re-occurrence would be averted completely.

Performing the flag-off at the Nanka end of Ekwulobia Road, the Governor recalled that the first phase of the exercise began six months earlier but was disrupted by the rains. It was meant to cover all categories of roads in the state, irrespective of ownership status and would be completed before Christmas, as part of preparation for the expected mass return.

At Orlu Road, Ihiala, where a badly damaged road was being rehabilitated, the Anambra Governor urged youths to support the ongoing project by clearing grasses on the roads and opening up blocked drainage.

The State Commissioner for Works, Callistus Ilozumba, enjoined local government councils and town unions to support the project while maintaining that the commitment of the State Government towards fixing the roads was total.

Concluding the tour at Onitsha, the Governor warned against building unauthorized bumps and burning of tyres on roads during festive periods, as it weakens and reduces the life span of the affected road. He noted that the ongoing rehabilitation would ensure free flow of traffic and promote road safety.

Governor Obiano also promised that an agency within the Ministry of Works would be set up to continuously ensure that pot holes and failed portions of roads across the state are fixed.
