Alex-BadehThe Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, has said that the attack on his hometown, Vimtim, is an attack on Nigeria and should not be seen as a sign that the Nigerian military is helpless as being insinuated.

After a National Council of State meeting held on Tuesday at the presidential Villa in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, Mr Badeh told reporters that the military was doing its best to end the terrorism in the north-east.

On Thursday, there were reporters that the members of a terrorist group, Boko Haram, had overturn Vimtim, a town in Adamawa State.

The attack on the town occurred after reports that the group had taken over Mubi.

But after the Tuesday council meeting, Air Marshal Badeh told reporters that the attack on his village is an attack on Nigeria.

“That does not in anyway mean that the military is helpless as being insinuated in some quarters. The attack could have been on any part of Nigeria and it does not make any difference if it took place in Vimtim,” he said.

The National Council of State meeting was presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan while four former heads of state were in attendance.

They include Generel Yakubu Gowon, Mr Shehu Shagari, Mr Ernest Shonekan and Mr Olusegun Obasanjo.

After a briefing by the National Security Adviser, the council observed that the government was doing everything possible to ensure that the over 200 schoolgirls who were abducted from their dormitory at the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok in April were released safe and sound.

It called on security agents to add more venom to the fight against terrorism in Nigeria’s north-east.
