FRSC To Introduce Speed Governor In 2015

Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Commission ( FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi on Wednesday disclosed the agency’s plan to introduce “Speed Governor” – a device used in controlling speed limits – come June 1, 2015.

This is in line with the ongoing FRSC and Speed Limit Implementation, by which the rate of accidents on the road can be reduced.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, the Corps Marshall said that the speed governor would be implemented to control the speed of vehicles and hinder them from exceeding 100 kph while on the express.

According to him. “the Standard Organisation of Nigeria has approved the standard of the device which is … to help cut down the speed limit. No matter how you accelerate, you can not exceed that speed limit of a 100”.

The speed governor will also be used in trucks to prevent them from exceeding the actual speed limit.

He explained that in August all the stakeholders signed a Memorandum of Understanding that June 1, 2015 they will commence the enforcement of the certification of the speed limit devices phase 1 on commercial buses, tankers, trucks and high capacity buses.

He said that the focus was to save lives as “lots of lives are being lost” in accidents that occur on Nigerian roads.

He noted that the devices was used in advanced countries but that Kenya was the only African country using it, according to a UN report.

“In the UN publication for World Remembrance Day, it was only Kenya that was mentioned, South-Africa just introduced theirs while countries like Tanzania, Uganda have theirs.”

He advised on all drivers on the road to cut down on their speed limit and possibly not exceed the speed limit of 100.
