At a meeting of Judges of the ECOWAS court on Wednesday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, the President of the Community Court of Justice, Justice Maria Do Ceu Monteiro, decried the non-appointment of a national authority for the enforcement of its judgements and decisions.
This, according to her, has been a setback to the advancement of the communities’ laws within the West African sub region.
Before the meeting began, procession of honourable Justices of the ECOWAS Community Court was held to mark the 2014/2015 legal year of the court.
It is the 14th year since the establishment of the court, but in the midst of some successes achieved by the court in treaty agreements, conventions, protocols and regulations, officials of the court seemed not satisfied with the level of enforcement of its decisions in member states.
While the community court is beaming its search light on member countries, key players in the judiciary are also asking for speedy hearings on pending cases before the court and the ratification of other community protocols.
Officials of the ECOWAS community court promised to ensure the observance of laws and principles of equity and human rights.
They also observed that they could only achieve much through the support of governments of member countries
