Kaduna Flood Victims Get Relief Materials

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has donated relief materials to victims of the recent flood that ravaged 10 Local Governments Areas in Kaduna State, North-West Nigeria.

This came as victims count their loses as a result of the flood that submerged their homes and destroyed property worth millions of naira last Monday.

Items distributed to them include food items, toiletries, bedding and mosquito treated nets.

NEMA said that the gesture is to alleviate the suffering of the victims.

The presentation was made by a delegation of the agency, led by the representative of North West Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr Musa Ilalah.

Some of the victims, while explaining their ordeal, said that it would take them weeks to settle and live a normal life again, as many families continue to stay with relatives.

According to them, children have not been able to attend schools because many parents have relocated to safer environments.

A woman who is said to have lost over 4,000 fishes in her pond, appealed to the government for assistance.

However, the victims have also been blamed for failing to heed early warnings asking them to vacate the flood prone areas ahead of the heavy rains.

In response to this, most of the residents were of the view that if the government could provide proper drainage channels in the affected areas, their flooding problems would be ameliorated, while other complained of not being financially buoyant to look for alternative houses.

With many yet to go back to their homes, NEMA has created eight camps for those that are internally displaced by the flood.

As government officials hope that the relief materials serve its purpose, the victims are appealing to the State Government to find a lasting solution to the perennial flooding in their areas.

Over 2,000 houses in some parts of the state were destroyed by flood, rendering thousands homeless.
