British Govt. Provides £30mln Aid For Northeast Rehabilitation

The British government is providing 32 million pounds over the next three years for humanitarian assistance to some of the estimated 7 million people affected by insurgency in northeast Nigeria.

The UK Minister for International Development, Mr Nick Hurd, during his visit to Nigeria, said that the funds will be channelled through the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross and other humanitarian organisations.

It will be used to provide nutrition, food security, water and sanitation, and protection of civilians affected by the conflict as well as technical expertise and training to the military.

He said that the support is part of the numerous areas of partnership with the Nigerian government which also includes, education for young people, especially the girl child, fighting corruption, power generation and helping the government create better business environment in Nigeria.

Mr Hurd said that there is no question of diversion of funds as all UK aid go through channels other than government systems and the British government is determined to offer every possible assistance to bring life and hope back to the northeast of Nigeria.
