All 23 governors elected under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) stormed the northern Nigerian city of Kano on Monday to discuss issues of electoral reform and constitutional amendment.
The Progressive Governors are saying that the only way to legitimize political power is to ensure the emergence of political leaders through a free and fair electoral process.
Channels TV correspondent, Idris Jibrin, reported that the governors had agreed to prioritize issues of amendment, taking into account the amendments passed by the 7th National Assembly and proposals before the 8th NASS.
Their resolutions are to serve as guide to all APC legislators with respect to electoral reforms and constitutional amendments.
‘Electoral Reform And Constitutional Amendment: Where We Are, Challenges And Way Forward’ was the theme for the parley.
Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state told the parley that in order to address the legislative challenges facing Nigeria’s democracy, the need for consistent institutionalized engagement is necessary.
Speaking on issues and challenges of amendment to the Electoral Act, the Governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal, said that the objectives of the APC parley was to create conducive platform for engagements around specific challenges that are of interest to the legislative and executive arms at both federal and states level.
Meanwhile, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state said that the parley would come up with a framework that will guide the process of legislative consensus through the use of all APC legislative stakeholders.
The Progressive Legislative Parley is expected to be revisited by the governors on a quarterly basis.
