Buhari Condemns ‘Unacceptable’ New Year Killings

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday condemned the New Year tragedy which occurred in various states across the nation including Rivers, Ilorin, Benue and Kaduna State.

The President in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu expressed shock and outrage at reports of the killings.

Some gunmen on Monday attacked worshippers while returning to their homes in Omoku, Rivers State killing many while a traditional ruler, the Etum Numana, Dr Gambo Makama, and his wife were murdered in their home in Sango Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Buhari in the message commiserated with the families of the victims and wished the injured faster recovery. He further described the incidents as “reprehensible and unacceptable.”

He then directed law enforcement agencies in both states to intensify their current efforts in order to speedily bring the perpetrators to face the wrath of the law.

“I have always maintained that nothing justifies the taking of the life of an innocent person. People in our communities must learn to live peacefully,” he said.

President Buhari also appealed to the communities affected not to embark on reprisal attacks, but allow the security agencies to carry out comprehensive investigations to properly punish the culprits.
