The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has called on the security agencies to ensure the arrest of the gunmen who killed at least 41 people in Zamfara State.

Senator Saraki said this in a tweet posted late on Friday, one day after suspected armed bandits attack Birane village in Zurmi Local Government Area of the state.

“I join all Nigerians in condemning the killings of innocent and defenceless citizens in Birane village, Zurmi LGA of Zamfara State.

“Such senseless acts have no place in our society. Our security agencies must do all that it takes to find and prosecute the perpetrators,” he said.

His reaction also followed a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu.

In the statement, President Muhammadu Buhari had directed the Minister of Defence, Brigadier-General Mansur Dan Ali (Rtd), to proceed immediately to Zamfara State for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and report back.

He had also ordered the security agencies to immediately mobilise and deploy their members to the vulnerable areas of the state, and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to face the full wrath of the law.

In another tweet on Saturday, the Senate President mourned the death of the 21 students of Government Secondary School Misau, Bauchi State, killed in an auto crash.

He condoled with the parents of the students, as well as the families of the three teachers and a driver who also died in the accident.

“As a father, I know what it means to lose a beloved child in this kind of unfortunate circumstance,” Saraki said. “This is not a loss to Bauchi State alone; the entire country has lost a generation of future leaders.”

He further commiserated with the authorities of the affected school, as well as the people and government of Bauchi State, especially Senator Isa Misau, in whose constituency the affected school is located.

Senator Saraki prayed to God to grant the souls of the departed eternal rest and their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
