Some gunmen suspected to be on a mission to invade the police armoury have attacked a Police Division in Lemu area of Niger State.

The gunmen were said to have engaged police personnel on the ground in a gun duel which lasted for about an hour on Friday in Gbako Local Government Area of the state.

They reportedly made away with an AK-47 rifle belonging to the police, although they could not accomplish their mission as planned.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Dibal Yakadi, confirmed the attack to Channels Television at his office in Minna, the Niger State capital.

He, however, denied the claim that the hoodlums freed some suspects in the police custody.

Meanwhile, Yakadi disclosed that the Command has busted six kidnap syndicates who have been terrorising innocent citizens in the state.

He assured the residents that the police remain committed to tackling all forms of crimes and criminality, especially the activities of kidnappers.
