Ekiti Communities At Loggerheads Over Federal College Of Education Siting

There are indications of a dispute between Omuo and Ilawe communities both in Ekiti South senatorial district over the recent location of a Federal College of Education in Ekiti State.

With the siting of the institution in Ilawe Ekiti, one of the communities has protested the development, insisting on being the host.

According to the community, the bone of contention is having a sense of inclusion in terms of federal presence, and the current situation begs for stakeholders’ mediation.

Ekiti State has been without a college of education since the upgrade of the existing one in Ikere Ekiti to a university of education.

While Ilawe natives laud the recent establishment of the Federal College of Education in Ekiti, it has however incensed Omuo community members.

Members of Omuo Community in Ekiti East Local Government alleged a foul play which they want to be addressed, insisting they did all the spade work at the National Assembly to bring the institution to their community and their much-deprived axis.

But the atmosphere in Ilawe Ekiti, Ekiti Southwest local government is that of excitement and celebration of the establishment of the college with the appointed provost and his team already accorded a warm reception.

According to the Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Ajibade Alabi, the establishment of the institution has come to stay.

In the meantime, Ilawe community has designated a secondary school facility as a temporary site for the institution.

The state government said it supported a balanced spread of institutions but appealed for calm pending a final response by the federal government.

Messages sent to the Federal Ministry of Education from Channels Television were not responded to as of press time.
