The British High Commission in Nigeria extended a warm welcome to 178 exceptional scholars and fellows who recently completed their studies through the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth UK scholarships. These scholars pursued a diverse range of master’s degrees, fellowships, and PhD programmes, contributing to their personal growth and expertise.

Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter hosted a Welcome Home Reception for the newly returned 2022/2023 Nigerian scholars and fellows in Lagos. Their successful completion of rigorous programmes provided them with invaluable skills and networks, empowering them to drive positive change within Nigeria and beyond.

In his address at the reception, British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter expressed pride in welcoming back the Commonwealth and Chevening Scholars. He congratulated each scholar on their successful completion, many with distinctions. Baxter emphasised the significance of their UK education, urging them to leverage their newfound knowledge and skills to make a lasting impact in Nigeria.

He encouraged them, saying, “Aim for excellence and continue to uphold the values of both the UK and Nigeria through your remarkable achievements.”.

Among the scholars, Commonwealth Fellow Ebere Iwuagwu, who studied at the Lifegate Outreach Centre UK, shared her passion for environmental advocacy. During her work, she recognized the energy scarcity faced by many communities, particularly women and youths. The Commonwealth Fellowship equipped her with insights into renewable options derived from natural resources, such as solar and vegetable-based solutions. These sustainable approaches can be adopted to minimise environmental impact and enhance human health in local communities.

Similarly, Chevening Scholar Jonathan Ayodele, specialising in cybersecurity at Cardiff University, exemplifies the commitment of these scholars to advancing knowledge and contributing to Nigeria’s progress.

He said, “I have plans to build a tech hub in Ikorodu, Lagos, with a vision for Ikorodu to lead in technological innovation. My aim is to foster local talent, enhance livelihoods and inspire the next wave of technology leaders.

“The proposed hub will catalyse economic empowerment by providing a platform for youth skills development, and entrepreneurship, bridging the divide between local talent and international opportunities.”

The British High Commission celebrates their achievements and looks forward to the positive transformations they will bring to their home country.

Every year, over 100 Nigerian students benefit from scholarships for postgraduate, PhD degree and fellowship programmes. The Commonwealth scheme has impacted over 3,000 alumni in Nigeria since its inception.
