Lagos Lawmakers Allege DSS Invasion Of Assembly

Lawmakers in the Lagos House of Assembly have alleged that policemen and Department of State Services operatives invaded the hallowed chambers on Monday.

The lawmakers engaged in a tussle with the security operatives before eventually gaining access to the chambers. They then held a plenary, which was presided over by Speaker Mojisola Meranda.

They took turns to condemn the alleged action of the secret police and asked the Director General of the DSS, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, to provide an explanation for the action of his men.

The members who spoke include Kehinde Joseph, representing Alimosho Constituency 2, and Ladi Ajomale, representing Oshodi-Isolo 2, among other members.

Thirty-six lawmakers in the 40-member house who were present passed a vote of confidence in the new speaker, saying that plots to make the new speaker resign her office for the former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa won’t stand.

Meranda became emotional as the lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in her and adjourned the plenary indefinitely.

The DSS and the assembly have since traded words over the presence of secret policemen at the House. While the DSS said its operatives were invited, the House denied placing such a request.

Last month, more than two-thirds of members of the assembly removed long-term speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of fraud and other sundry charges and replaced him with Meranda.
