A devastating explosion rocked the Gidan Karfe area along the Eastern Bypass in Kano City on Friday, leaving five people dead and at least ten others seriously injured.

The blast, which occurred in the afternoon, is believed to have been caused by explosive devices hidden among scrap materials transported from Yobe State.

The incident sparked widespread panic in the vicinity, with emergency responders and security operatives rushing to the scene.

Commissioner of Police in Kano, Ibrahim Bakori, who arrived at the location shortly after the explosion, confirmed the casualties and provided early details about the suspected cause.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that explosive materials were concealed in a truck transporting scrap from Yobe State,” CP Bakori stated. “The device likely detonated while the vehicle was being offloaded at the site.”

Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos and destruction, with thick smoke billowing into the sky and nearby residents fleeing in fear.

Emergency services, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the police bomb squad, quickly cordoned off the area. Victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, where medical personnel worked to stabilize the injured.

Security agencies have launched a full investigation into the explosion. The motive behind the transport of explosives in a scrap-laden truck remains unclear.

“We are treating this incident with the utmost seriousness,” CP Bakori said. “Our teams are working diligently to uncover how these materials were transported across state lines undetected, and whether there are broader security implications.”

He urged residents to remain calm but vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

This tragic incident comes amid heightened concerns about security in northern Nigeria, where various regions continue to grapple with threats from insurgents and criminal groups.
